A

‘Abd (عبد)
servant, worshipper, slave. Muslims consider
themselves servants and slaves of God. Common Muslim names such as
Abdullah (Servant of God), Abdul-Malik (Slave of the King),
Abdur-Rahmān (Slave of the most Beneficent), Abdus-Salām (Slave of
Peace), all refer to names of . Also used in modern times as a derogatory term for Blacks.

Adab (أدب)
Traditionally
describes good manners, as in etiquette. For example, being courteous
is good adab. However, the term can be used very broadly, and the
proper translation would be "the proper way to go about something," as
in the example, Aadaab al Qitaal, or, "The Proper Way of Fighting in
War," (Qitaal in Arabic means mortal combat) in which the word
"etiquette" does not befit the context. Literally meaning literature.

Ādhān (أذان)
call to salat (prayer), sometimes alternatively spelled and pronounced Azaan and Adhan.

‘Adl (عدل)
Justice especially distributive justice: social, economic, political, environmental.

"Anno
Hegirae (In the year of the Hijra)." The Islamic calendar starts
counting years starting from the time when Muhammad had to leave Mecca
and go to Medina, an event known as the Hijra: July 16, 622.

Aḥad (أحد)
literally "one." Islamically, ahad means One Alone, unique, none like God. Al-Wahid is one of the names of God.

Aḥkām (أحكام)
rulings and orders of the Qu'ran and Sunnah. Five kinds of orders: Wajib, Mustahab, Muharram, Makruh, and Halal.

Ahlul-Bayt (أهل البيت ) members of Muhammad's Household. Also known among Shia as the Masumin (infallibles; spiritually pure).

Ahlul-Fatrah ( أهل الفترة)
people
who live in ignorance of the teachings of a revealed religion, but
according to the "Fitra", the "Natural Religion" innate to human nature
as created by God.

Ahl ul-Kitāb (أهل الكتاب )
"People
of the Book", or followers of pre-Islamic monotheistic religions with
some form of scripture believed to be of divine origin which were
mentioned in Quran: Jews, Christians, Sabians, Magians or Zoroastrians.
Sometimes said to include also Hanifs. Has at times been extended to
include pre-Islamic religious traditions with scriptures which were not
mentioned in Quran, e.g.: Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, Confucians.

Ākhirah (الآخرة)
hereafter or eternal life

Akhlāq (أخلاق)
The practice of virtue. Morals.

Al-Birr (البر)
piety and righteousness and every act of obedience to .

‘Ālamīn (عالمين) :
Literally "worlds", humankind, jinn, angels and all that exists

Alayhis Salam (السلام عليه)
"Peace
be upon him" This expression normally follows after naming a prophet
(other than Muhammad), or one of the noble Angels (i.e.
Jibreel[Gabriel], Mikaeel[Michael], etc.)

Al-Ḥamdu lillāh (الحمد لله)
"Praise be to God!" Qur'anic exclamation and also same meaning as hallelujah.

Allāh (الله)
God (in monotheistic understanding of the word); the only entity worthy of worship

Allahumma (اللَّهُمَّ)
"O God."

Allāhu Akbar (الله أكبر)
"God is the Greatest." Islamic expression.

‘Ālim (عالم)
One
who knows. A scholar (in any field of knowledge); a scientist (who
knows science) or a theologian (who knows religion); similar to
Japanese sensei, "teacher". Also meaning "world"

Amānah (أمانة)
the trust. Of all creation, only human beings carry the "trust", which is free will.

Āmīn (آمين)
Amen, a supplication meaning, "O God, accept our invocation!" (used only in Sunni Islam)

Amīrul-Mu’minīn (أمير المؤمنين)
In some countries like Morocco, a Amīrul-Mu’minīn or Commander of the faithful is the religious chief.

Aminah (أمنة)
Muhammad's mother. Aminah fell sick and died in Abwa, near Madina (then Yathrib) when Muhammad was six years old.

Al Amr Bi'l Maruf
Islamic doctrine of enjoining right.

Ansār (أنصار)
"Helpers." The Muslim converts at Medina who helped the Muslims from Mecca after the Hijrah.

‘Aqīdah (عقيدة)
The
Islamic creed, or the six article of faith, which consists of the
belief in God, Angels, Messengers and Prophets, Scriptures, the Day of
Judgment, and Destiny.

Aqiqah
Islamic practice of
shaving the head of the new born male and contributing the weight in
silver for charity as well as 2 lambs. One lamb is slaughtered for a
baby girl.

‘Aql (عقل)
Intelligence, intellect, mind, understanding

Arkan singular rukn (ركن/أركان)
The five rukn "pillars" of Islam. (See rukn)

A.S. ('Alayhis-salaam)
This
acronym evokes a blessing and is appended to the names of the prophets
who came before Muhammad. It will also be applied the mothers of those
prophets. When following a woman's name, the feminine form is
'Alayhas-salaam.

Asl (pl. usool)
Root, origin, source; principle.

Aslim Taslam (أسلم تسلم)
"Submit to Islam" (See dawah)

Asmā’ al-Ḥusnā (أسماء الله الحسنى)
List of God's 99 names. According to a hadith, the one who enumerates them all will enter Paradise.

‘Aṣr (العصر)
The third salat prayer. The time of the day before sunset and after noon. also means "era".

Aṣ-Ṣirāṭ
The bridge on which judgement of where a person's Akhira (afterlife) will lie is passed.

al-Asharatu Mubashsharun bil-Jannah or just Asharatu Mubashsharah (Arabic
العشرة
المبشّرون بالجنة or عشرة المبشّر; Transliteration:
‘Asharatul-mubashshirūn or ‘Asharatul-mubashshirūne bil Jannah): The
ten companions of Muhammad who were promised paradise (only in Sunni
Islam)

‘Āshūrā’ (عاشوراء)
Tenth day of the month of
Muharram. It is the day God saved Moses and the children of Israel from
the Pharaoh. The grandson of the prophet Muhammad, Imam Hussayn
sacrificed his life along with 72 of his companions on the sand dunes
of Karbala. Sunni Scholars recommended to fast during this day. To the
Shias, it is also a day on which they mourn the death of the third Shia
Imam, Husayn ibn Ali, along with his family and companions, who were
killed in the famous battle in Karbala.

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum (السلام عليكم)
The
Islamic greeting; literally "Peace be upon you"; In addition,
wa-Raḥmatullāhi wa-Barakātuhu means "and the Mercy of God and His
blessing". The response to this greeting is wa-‘Alaykum us-Salām
wa-Raḥmatullāhi wa-Barakātuhu --"And on you be the Peace and Mercy of
God and His Blessing".

Astaghfirullāh (أستغفر الله)
"I seek forgiveness from God." Islamic expression.

A'udhu billah (أعوذ بالله ’A‘ūdhu billāh)
"I seek refuge in God". This is a paraphrase on the beginnings of the two last suras in the Qur'an.

Awliyā’ (أولياء)
Friends, protectors, helpers, caretaker, maintainer. (singular: wali)

‘Awrah (عورة)
The
parts of the body, male or female, must be covered in public but not
between spouses, such as, body parts must be concealed of a woman
before non-related men.(non-related men means she can marry those men
lawfully).

Āyah (آية), plural āyāt (آيات)
A sign. More specifically, a verse in the Qur'an.

Āyatullāh (آية الله, also spelled Ayatollah)
Sign of God Title given to highly ranked religious scholars in Sh'ia sect.

Bab Al-Raiyan :
The name of one of the gates of Heavens
(Jannah) through which the people who often observe fasting will enter
on the Day of Judgement.

Badr :
Site of the first
great battle between Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and the pagans of the
Quraish in 2 A.H. Badr is located about 150 kilometers south of Madinah
(Saudi Arabia). The Muslim army consisted of 313 men and the Quraish
had a total of about 1,000 soldiers, archers and horsemen. See Holy
Quran, Al-Anfal (8:5-19, 42-48), Ale Imran (3:13).

Baghawat:
insurgency against a legitimate government

Bahimah :
Bahimah
(plural baha'im) signifies every quadruped animal (of which the beasts
of prey are excluded). Bahimah thus refers to goats, sheep, and cows.

Bai'a (بيعة) : pledge


Batil (باطل) : void

Baitul Mal :
An Islamic treasury intended for the benefit of the Muslims and the Islamic state and not for the leaders or the wealthy.

Baitul Maqdis :
Al-Aqsa Mosque, the famous Masjid in Al-Quds (Jerusalem). It was the first Qiblah of Islam. Then Ta'ala ordered Muslims to face the first House of ,
the Ka'aba, at Makkah (Saudi Arabia). Baitul Maqdis is the third
greatest Masjid in the Islamic world. It is from the surroundings of
Baitul Maqdis that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) ascended to heaven. See
Holy Quran, Al-Isra (17:1).

Baitullah (بيت الله baytullāh) :
A mosque, literally "house of God".

Bakka :
Another name for Makkah. See Holy Quran, Ale Imran (3:96).

Barakah (بركة) :
a
form of blessing. Also, spiritual wisdom and blessing transmitted from
master to pupil. The special favor or divine grace which is possessed
by the "friends of God," or Sufi masters in particular.

BarakAllahu Feekum :
may bless you; response to expression of thanks.

Barzakh (برزخ) :
The
one-way barrier between the mortal realm and the spirit world which the
deceased soul crosses and waits for qiyamah judgment.

Basher (بشر) :
Human(s). Literally means 'face' but generally it refers to a person (man/woman).

Baṣīrah (بصيرة) :
Insight,
discernment, perceptivity, deep knowledge. Sometimes used by Sufis to
denote the ability to directly perceive a transcendental Truth.

Batin :
The interior or hidden meaning. A person who devotes himself to studying such hidden meanings is a batini.

Bid‘ah (بدعة) :
Innovation
in religion, i.e. inventing new methods of worship. Bad Bid'ahs in
Islam are considered a deviation and a serious sin by many Muslims.

Bid'ah sayyi'ah :
Inquiry prohibited in Islam.

Bint (بنت) :
daughter

Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) :
"In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful".

Burda (بردة) :
not an Arabic term; means "curtain" in Persian. Means covering or to cover.

Buhtan :
A false accusation, calumny, slander.

Bay‘ah (بيعة) :
an oath of allegiance to a leader, traditionally the Caliph or Imam.

the second obligatory daily prayer.

Dīn (الدين)

way of life based on Islamic revelation; the sum total of a Muslim's
faith and practice. Dīn is often used to mean the faith and religion of
Islam.

Diyya (دية)
fine for unintentional murder.

Dua (دعاء)
personal prayer, supplication

Eid Al-Adha :
A
four-day festival that completes the rites of pilgrimage and takes
place on the 10th-13th of Dhul Hijjah (the 10th is the day of Nahr and
11th-13th are the days of Tashriq.) Literally means "the feast of the
sacrifice." This feast commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's obedience to by being prepared to sacrifice his only son Ismel, peace be on both of them. See Holy Quran, as-Saffaat (37:100-103).

Eid Al-Fitr :
Three day festival marking the end of Ramadan. It takes place on the 1st of Shawal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.Eed Al-Adhha
The
"feast of sacrifice." It is celebrated from the tenth through the
thirteenth days of dhul-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Muslim
calendar.Another Eed is Eed Al-Fitr (See Id)

Ethiaat
Also Ahwat. A Precaution, either obligatory or optional.[2]

Ethiaat-Mustahabbi
A preferred precation.[2]

Ethiaat-Waajib
An obligatory precation.[2]

Ghaflah (غفلة) :
heedlessness, forgetfulness of God, indifference

Ghair Muakkada :
(Salah)
Unascertained prayers. These types of optional Salah (prayers) were
much, but not always, practiced by the Prophet (S.A.W.).

Gharar :
The
uncertainty in transactions. Selling something which has not yet been
obtained. For example, selling eggs which have not yet been hatched.

Ghayb (غيب) :
the unseen, unknown.

Ghayy :
Deception. Name of a pit in Hellfire.

Ghazawat :
Plural of Ghazwa. Also called al-Maghazi. See Ghazwa

Ghazi :
A person who has taken part in a Ghazwa.

Ghazwah :
A battle for the cause of in which Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) himself took part

Gheebah :
Talking evil about someone in his or her absence. Backbiting. See Holy Qur'an, Al-Hujurat (49:12).

Ghulool :
Stealing from the war booty before its distribution.

Ghusl :
The
full ritual washing of the body with water alone to be pure for the
prayer. to do Ghusl: 1. Wash your private parts, 2. do Wudu (ablution),
3. wash your entire body without touching your private parts again.

Gog and Magog :
Two
evil empires. They are mentioned in the Qur'an and Ahadeeth (Bukhari
and Muslim) when mentioning some of the scenes just before the final
hour. See Quran, Al-Anbiyaa (21:96), Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Fitan wa
Isharat as-Say'ah.

Hadi :
A cow, sheep or a goat that is offered as a sacrifice by a pilgrim during the Hajj.

Hadith :
The
word hadith literally means communication or narration. In the Islamic
context it has come to denote the record of what the Prophet (S.A.W.)
said, did, or tacitly approved. According to some scholars, the word
hadith also covers reports about the sayings and deeds, etc. of the
Companions of the Prophet in addition to the Prophet himself. The whole
body of Traditions is termed Hadith and its science 'Ilm al-Hadith.

Hadith :
(pl:
ahadith): the recorded teachings, sayings and actions of Prophet
Muhammad (saas) which explain and interpret the Qur’anic verses and
Message of Islam

Hadith Qudsi :
A saying of Ta'ala narrated by the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), that is not part of the Qur'an.

Hadiyyah: :
(n) gift

Hajar Al-Aswad :
The
'Black Stone', a stone which some say fell from heaven, set into one
corner of the Ka'bah in Makkah by Prophet Ibrahim(S.A.W.), which the
pilgrims, in imitation of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) kiss, so unifying
all the Muslims throughout the ages in one place.

Hajj (Major Pilgrimage) :
Hajj
is one of the five pillars of Islam, a duty one must perform during
one's life-time if one has the financial resources for it. It must be
performed during certain specified dates of Dhu al-Hijjah. In addition
to tawaf and sa'y, there are a few other requirements but especially
one's standing (i.e. stay) in 'Arafat during the day-time on 9th of Dhu
al-Hijjah.

Halal :
Lawful as defined by the Almighty.

Hanif :
Hanif,
literally 'one who is inclined', is used in the Qur'an in ten places,
six with reference to the Prophet Abraham and the rest for one who is
sincere and sound in his faith. The term as such connotes sincerity,
uprightness and singlemindedness in one's inclination, dedication and
commitment to God or to His faith.

Haram :

1. Any act or deed which is prohibited by and will incur His wrath and punishment.

2.
Sanctuary or boundary of any Masjid (mosque), but usually used with
regard to the sanctuaries of the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid
al-Rasool in Madinah. This is why they are referred to as 'Al-Haramain
al-Sharifain,' the two Holy Sanctuaries.

watering-place of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), whose pure drink will
refresh those who have crossed the Siraat before entering the Garden on
the Last Day.

Hawiyah :
The sixth level of Nar (Hellfire). This will be the home of the Christians.

Haya:
An
attitude and behavior in which all indecency is avoided, therefore
acting as a preventive measure against numberous sins; as such it
serves to strengthen faith

Hijab :
Any kind of veil-it could be a curtain, a facial veil, etc. The facial Hijab is divided into two types:

1. Niqab: full facial covering.

2.
Khimar: partial facial covering, i.e., it covers the face, but leaves
the eyes exposed. It is said that the universe is what veils the
Creator from the creation. If you find the veil awe-inspiring, how much
more awe-inspiring is the One behind the veil!

Hijaz :
The region along the western seaboard of Arabia, in which Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, and Ta'if are situated.

Hijrah :
Hijrah
signifies migration from a land where a Muslim is unable to live
according to the precepts of his faith to a land where it is possible
to do so. The hijrah par excellence for Muslims is the hijrah of the
Prophet (S.A.W.) which not only provided him and his followers refuge
from persecution, but also an opportunity to build a society and state
according to the ideals of Islam.

Hijrah: :
(n) emigration; the hijrah to Madinah from Makkah took place in 622 a.d.

Hijri :
Name
of the Islamic lunar calendar. It took its name from the early Muslims
who migrated from Makkah to Madinah, and commences from the date of
Prophet Muhammad's Hijrah, (S.A.W.), which he made with Abu Bakr
as-Siddiq (may
be pleased with him), in 622 C.E. The months of the Islamic calendar
are: 1. Muharram 2. Safar 3. Rabi al-Awal 4. Rabi al-Thani 5. Jumada
al-Awal 6. Jumada al-Thani 7. Rajab 8. Sha'ban 9. Ramadan 10. Shawal
11. Dhul Qi'da 12. Dhul Hijjah

Hikmah :
(n) 1). Wisdom; 2). The Wisdom, the Qur’anic term for the Sunnah of Rasullah (saas)

Hubal :
Hubal,
the chief of the minor deities, was an image of a man, and was said to
have been originally brought to Arabia from Syria. It was one of the so
many false gods of Arabs housed in the Kabah.

Hukm :
Hukm,
literally judgement, decision, (6:57) sometimes gives the meaning of
wisdom, discretion, knowledge and the power to see things in their true
perspective (26:83).

I'tikaf :
I'tikaf
refers to the religious practice of spending the last ten days of
Ramadan (either wholly or partly) in a mosque so as to devote oneself
exclusively to worship. In this state one may go out of the mosque only
for the absolutely necessary requirements of life, but one must stay
away from gratifying one's sexual desire. The minimum period for
i'tikaf is twenty-four hours. I'tikaf is not valid if one is not
keeping the fast or if it is done outside the month of Ramadan

Ibadah :
'Ibadah
is used in three meanings: (1) worship and adoration; (2) obedience and
submission; and (3) service and subjection. The fundamental message of
Islam is that man, as God's creature, should direct his 'ibadah to Him
in all the above-mentioned meanings, and associate none in the
rendering of it.

Ibadat:
(n) acts of workship; a comprehensive word comprising deeds and words that loves and is pleased with whether manifested or hidden; There are two conditions of Ibadah: 1. Sincerity to , 2. Submission to 's
Messenger i.e. to act according to his Sunnah. Some types of Ibadah are
the prayers, the obligatory charity,fasting, the pilgrimage, fear of , hope in His Mercy, Seeking His aid. and other acts of worship which has commanded and enjoined.

Iblîs:
A jinn and shaytaan (satan) 2:34

Iddah :
Iddah
denotes the waiting period that a woman is required to observe as a
consequence of the nullification of her marriage with her husband or
because of the husband's death. For details see the Qur'an, Al-Baqara
(2:228-235), At-Talaq (65:4-7.

Iftar:
To break the fast

Ihsan :
Ihsan
literally denotes doing something in a goodly manner. When used in the
Islamic religious context, it signifies excellence of behavior arising
out of a strong love for God and a profound sense of close relationship
with Him. According to a Tradition the Prophet (S.A.W.) defined ihsan
as worshipping God as though one sees Him.

Ihsân :
The highest level of deeds and worship, (perfection i.e. when you worship
or do deeds, consider yourself as if you see Him and if you cannot
achieve this feeling or attitude, then you must bear in mind that He
sees you).

Ijma :
Ijma refers to the consensus of
eminent scholars (mujtahidun) of Islam in a given age. Ijma comes next
to the Quran and the Sunnah as a source of Islamic doctrines.

Ijtihad :
To exercise personal judgement based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Ijtihad: :
Intellectual
effort of Muslim jurists to reach independent religio- legal decisions,
a key feature of modern Islamic reform; one who exercises ijtihad is a
mujtahid

Iqâmat-as-Salât :
Offer prayers perfectly 5:12, 35:29

Ila' :
Ila'
denotes a husband's vow to abstain from sexual relations with his wife.
The maximum permissible limit for abstaining from sexual relations in
wedlock under such a vow is four months, after which ila' would
automatically mean repudiation of the marriage.

Ilâh:
Deity, lord, god 5:73, 114:3

Ilm:
Knowledge

Imam:
leader
of the congregational prayer, salat, that the Muslims offer five times
a day. It is sometimes used to refer to the head of an Islamic State.

Imân (Eemân):
Faith

Imsak :

Imsak begins when the first light of dawn becomes visible, and ends at Fajr when the Adhan is called.

Injil :
Injil
signifies the inspired orations and utterances of Jesus (a.s) which he
delivered during the last two or three years of his earthly life in his
capacity as a Prophet. The Injil mentioned by the Quran should,
however, not be identified by the four Gospels of the New Testament
which contain a great deal of material in addition to the inspired
statements of the Prophet Jesus.

Insha :
"If wills."

Iqamah:
means
establishing. It is similar to the adhan with the addition of a pharse
that signifies that a compulsory prayer, fard, is about to begin.

Isha' :
Isha' (Night) Prayer signifies the prescribed Prayer which is performed after the night has well set in.

Isharat:
signs of the Last Day

Islam :
Islam Literally means "submission to the will of ."
The most important and pivotal concept in Islam is the oneness of God.
Islam teaches that all faiths have, in essence, one common message: the
existence of a Supreme Being, the one and only God, whose sovereignty
is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching
and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were
sent at various times and in many places throughout history.

Isnad;
Has two meanings:
Ascribing a hadeeth back to the one who said it - connecting the chain of narration, and
The chain of narrators which reaches back to the text - which is the same as "as-sanad"

Isra :
1. "The Night Journey", refers to the journey of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) from Makkah to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.

2. Another name for Surah Bani Israel (Surah 17) of the Holy Qur'an.

Istighfar:

to seek 's forgiveness. It is something that must be done continuously in a Muslims life.

Istikhara :
Asking
the Almighty to guide one to the right decision and action regarding a
particular problem. The Istikhara Prayer consists of two Rakahs. A
special invocation is said. See Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 263, Vol. 2.

Istisqa :
Invoking Ta'ala for rain in the time of a drought. The Istisqa Prayer consists of two rakahs. See Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 119, Vol. 2.

Ithm :
Ithm denotes negligence, dereliction of duty and sin.

Jahannam:
means Hell.

Jahiliyyah:
Extreme
ignorance (jahl) and disbelief. Often used to describe the era that
preceeded the revelation of the Qur'an, and ignorance in general.

Jihad:
To fight and kill in the path of , the enemies of , for the cause of . It can also be used to mean to strive in the path of .

Jilbaab:
A
loose-fitting garment covering the entire body, so that the shape of
the woman is not defined but hidden, including covering the head, face,
and hands. (Plural is Jalabib)

Jinn:
A creation of
made from smokeless fire. They are also invited to accept Islam and
will have to give account of their deeds on the Day of Judgement.

Jizyah:
a
tax paid by non-Muslims living in a Muslim State. Since the non-Muslims
are exempt from military service and taxes imposed on Muslims, they
must pay this tax to compensate. It guarentees them security and
protection. If the State cannot protect those who paid jizyah, then the
amount they paid is returned to them.

to do something right, nice and meaningful for others. It could also mean the blessings and welfare God blessed us with.

Kholoq:
nature, quality and character of someone.

Khutbah:
A speech or sermon. It is sometimes used to refer to the sermon given during the Friday congregational prayer.

Kuffar:
plural form of kafir.

Kufr:
to show ungratefulness to and not to believe in Him and His religion.

Kuwwirat:
Wound round and lost its light and is overthrown
